Gretna Green became a well known destination for runaway marriages following the 1753 Marriage Act in England and Wales whereby a parent could stop a marriage of a child under 21 years old; the age of marriage in Scotland at the time was 14 years old for boys and 12 years old for girls, and didn't require consent of their parents.
