Original antique Belle Époque Swiss travel poster celebrating the opening of the scenic meter-gauge railway line from Valais to Chamonix - Design by the Swiss painter Jean-Édouard Ravel (1847-1920) features a lady in traditional Swiss folk costume perched on a steep rocky hillside, looking down towards a winding river valley, a remote alpine village, and snow-capped mountain peaks. The lower-left panel displays the regional station stops at Martigny, Vernayaz, Salvan, Finhauts, and Châtelard, with an inset route network map featured in the bottom right corner, charting the rail connections across the French-Swiss border. Printed by the Société Suisse d'Affiches Artistiques, Genève. Very good condition, restored paper loss on margin, restored minor creasing, stamp on image, light staining, backed on linen.

What is a lithograph?
Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
