Oxfordshire Map WWII Ernest Clegg

£350.00

Original vintage post-World War Two map poster for Oxfordshire featuring a colourful design by Ernest Costain Clegg (1876-1954) of the county with illustrations of notable landmarks and tourist locations including Christchurch Cathedral, Blenheim Palace, Radcliffe Camera, Broughton Castle and Ditchley House with insignias and coats of arms as well as notable historical figures including John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), William Morris (1834-1896) and Admiral of the Fleet Sir Reginald Y. Tyrwhitt GCB (1870-1951), British farms, agriculture and food including the WWII Relief Milking scheme, cattle, sheep, corn, dairy, corn, potatoes, pigs, sugar beets, violets and watercress, information about the Women's Institute and the inventions of radar and penicillin and a quote by Sir Winston Churchill (who was born in the county) dated 26 December 1941, Washington DC - I feel greatly honoured that you should have invited me to address the representatives of both branches of Congress. The fact that my American forebears have for so many generations played their part in the life of the United States, and that here I am, an Englishman, welcomed in your midst, makes this experience one of the most moving and thrilling in my life, which is already long and has not been entirely uneventful. I wish indeed that my mother, whose memory I cherish across the vale of years, could have been here to see. By the way, I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way round, I might have got here on my own - as well details on the Prime Minister's wartime and military conferences and roads, castles, trees, rivers marked with a Scale of Miles at the bottom. Dedicated by kind permission to Sir A.P. Herbert MP. Printed by John Waddington Ltd. The Countryman Maps of Britain. One of a series produced for the Women's Land Army Benevolent Fund. Excellent condition.

FAQs

More information about our posters and service.

Are your posters originals?

All antique and vintage posters listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.

What is a lithograph?

Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.

With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.

Where do you deliver to?

We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
