65th Nippon Derby Tokyo Racecourse
Original vintage sport poster for the 65th Nippon Derby (GI) / 第65回日本ダービー horse race held at the Tokyo Racecourse on 7 June 1998, featuring a dynamic and vibrant design by the renowned Japanese graphic designer and printmaker Tadanori Yokoo (b. 1936), a psychedelic pop-art aesthetic, blending traditional Japanese cultural iconography with contemporary Western influences. The central image features a halftoned jockey racing on horseback, flanked by two black horse silhouettes, the Japanese national flag alongside the Japan Racing Association (JRA) emblem, framed by red roses and winged mythical horses. The lower portion includes a portrait of a horse within a circular frame, set against a classic Japanese wave motif, blooming flowers, and a stylised rising smiling sun pattern, the vertical text borders detail the race specifications: 2400 meters on turf at the Tokyo Racecourse. Very good condition, minor creasing, backed on linen.

What is a lithograph?
Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
