Original vintage London Underground advertising poster - The Underground Brings All Good Things Nearer / The Return of Persephone - featuring a stunning Art Deco design by the notable British artist and designer Dora Margaret Batty (1891-1966) depicting a Greek myth showing the Messenger God Hermes with his winged cap and caduceus staff rescuing the Goddess of Spring and Queen of the Underground Persephone in a flowing white dress, holding a flower and carrying a cornucopia horn spreading green leaves to start the spring season, the bold stylised lettering on banners around the image and below. Dora Batty was one of the most prolific female designers commissioned by the Underground Electric Railways Company, creating over 50 posters during the interwar era. Good condition, restored folds, restored tears, restored staining, minor staining, backed on linen.

What is a lithograph?
Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
