The river Danube divides the country into two parts and flows through the capital, Budapest. Hungary is home of the Magyars, a tribe of horsemen who settled on the great Hungarian plain over a thousand years ago. To this day the great plain pastures huge flocks of sheep, herds of cattle and droves of horses. Herdsmen wear heavy woollen greatcoats, the sleeves of which hang empty, while the coat is secured by a strap across the chest. These coats are richly embroidered. But the shepherds wrap up in whole sheepskins, in winter to keep out the bitter cold, and in summer to protect themselves against the stinging dust storms that sweep the hot plain.
