Wool In National Dress Poland

At one time a region of forests, much has now been cleared and turned into arable and pasture land. Through the heart of Poland flows the river Vistula on which stands the capital, Warsaw. Absence of natural boundaries has left the country prey to invaders - it has been the battle-ground of Eastern Europe. From 1795 to 1918 the Poles were a people without a country. Not the least factor in holding them together as a nation during these dark years was the National costume, based on the stiff wide skirt of coarsely woven wool, usually covered with a heavy contrasting apron. Much of the wool used is from sheep raised in the Lowicz district, famous for its brilliant dyes. The sheepskin coats worn by the men have the soft clipped wool inside.
