Olympic Games Berlin 1936 Franz Wurbel
Original vintage Summer Olympic Games poster for the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin from 1-16 August published by the German Railways Head Office for Tourist Traffic and the Propaganda Committee for the Olympic Games. Stunning classical influenced design by Franz Wurbel (b. 1896) featuring an iconic image of a sports man in gold wearing a green laurel leaf headpiece below the five Olympic rings dominated by the triumphant Brandenburg Gate Quadriga (the four horses leading an ancient chariot sculpted by Johann Gottfried Schadow; 1764-1850) in the foreground with the stylised text below. The German Chancellor Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) viewed the Berlin Games as an opportunity to promote his Nazi ideals; as part of the opening ceremony, the first torch run was held from ancient Olympia to the host city and these were the first Olympics to be televised. Franz Wurbel and Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1949) were commissioned to design dynamic posters for this international sport event. Good condition, restored folds, restored creasing, restored tears, backed on linen.

FAQs
More information about our posters and service.
Are your posters originals?
All our antique and vintage posters, books, maps and prints listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.
What is a lithograph?
Practically all of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves carving each colour of the image onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, we believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £25 for orders placed via our website.
