LT Roman Centurion London Underground Bainbridge
Original vintage London Transport poster featuring a fun image of an ancient white stone statue of an elegant lady sewing up the torn toga of a smiling Roman soldier (Weni Wedi Weci signed J Caesar engraved on the statue base with a heart and Balbus amat Portiam in graffiti below), in a ruin room with Roman pillars and the London Underground roundel logo on the floor, leading out to trees on hills in the background with a rhyme and text below: "A careless centurion from Gaul / Tore his toga on Hadrian's Wall / He longed for his home / And the comforts of home - or Verulamium, which had all mod cons including central heating (some of them are still there). Green Line chariots on routes 712, 713 and 714 would have taken him from Londinium to St Albans via Via Watling. Et tu Brute." Artwork by John Bainbridge (1920-1978), who designed posters for London Underground from 1953 to 1957. Fair condition, tape marks, minor loss and tears, backed on linen.

FAQs
More information about our posters and service.
Are your posters originals?
All our antique and vintage posters, books, maps and prints listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.
What is a lithograph?
Practically all of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves carving each colour of the image onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, we believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £25 for orders placed via our website.
Can I visit your gallery?
Yes. Our gallery is based in London. Our address is 404 King's Road, Chelsea, London SW10 0LJ.
Our opening hours are Monday-Friday 10am-6pm; Saturday 11am-5pm (by appointment only on Sundays and bank holidays*).
