WWI Prussia German Empire Octopus Europe Map

£1,250.00

Original antique World War One map poster portraying Prussia as an octopus stretching its tentacles over Europe with illustrations of soldiers on the side and the text above reading - En 1788 Mirabeau disait deja: La Guerre est l'industrie Nationale de la Prusse / In 1788 Mirabeau said that War is the National Industry of Prussia. The poster shows the aggressive expansion, symbolised as an octopus, from 1715 to 1914 with the Kingdom of Prussia in 1715 in red; in tight red diagonals 100 years later showing the acquisitions in Poland, Silesia (from Austria), the Rhineland and northern Saxony; in the wide red diagonals the additions that formed the German Empire in 1914, including the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871 and the occupied areas of northern France and Belgium. The historic Kingdom of Prussia was a German state formed in 1525 on the Baltic Sea with the capital in Konigsberg (now named Kaliningrad and part of Russia) until 1701 when the capital was moved to Berlin; the Kingdom was united in 1871 to create the German Empire (excluding Austria); it was de facto dissolved following the Prussian Coup in 1932 and abolished after World War Two in 1947 by the Allied Forces. Horizontal. Very good condition, staining, pinholes, print marks, backed on linen.
