Original vintage travel poster advertising a 132 day cruise on a luxury liner - World Cruise Red Star Liner Belgenland The largest ship to circle the world New York Nov. 25 Los Angeles Dec. 11 San Francisco Dec. 14 1925 - featuring a stunning image of the SS Belgenland sailing at sea with smoke from its three funnels rising into the sky in front of a beaming sun on the horizon, a sailing boat on the reflective water in the foreground, and the bold black and red title above and in black below against the gold border - International Mercantile Marine Company in conjunction with the American Express Company. Founded in 1871, Red Star Line was a joint venture between the International Navigation Company of Philadelphia and the Societe Anonyme de Navigation Belgo-Americaine; the shipping company's main ports of call were Antwerp in Belgium, Liverpool and Southampton in the United Kingdom and New York City and Philadelphia in the United States. The SS Belgenland was built in 1914 (owned by White Star Line and named Belgic from 1916-1923), serving as a cargo ship then a troop ship during World War One; from 1923-1935 she served as a cruise ship under ownership by Red Star Line operating world cruises, the longest attempted by a luxury liner at the time, advertised as The Largest Ship to Circle the Globe; she was sold to the Atlantic Transport Company in 1935 (renamed Columbia) and scrapped in 1936. Good condition, restored minor tears at edges, shadows of the text and image from another poster in the image, backed on linen.
