Ohi Day Oxi Day WWII Greece


Original vintage Greek poster celebrating Ohi Day featuring soldiers marching with bayonet rifle guns in front of ladies carrying boxes on their backs with the blue and white Greek flag in the background and the bold blue lettering on a banner below and diagonally on the sides on top of green leaves against a purple background. Celebrated annually in Greece and Cyprus on 28 October, Ohi Day (Oxi Day) commemorates the rejection during World War Two by the Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas (1871-1941; Prime Minister 1936-1941) of Italy's ultimatum to surrender Greece's neutral stance made by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on 28 October 1940. Horizontal. Good condition, restored pinholes, very light stains, trimmed edges, backed on linen.
