Navy League Sea Cadets Recruitment England Expects Nelson

£850.00

Original antique military recruitment propaganda poster for the Navy League Sea Cadets featuring a young boy in naval uniform saluting in front of Admiral Nelson (Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronte; 1758-1805) with a warship at sea in the background, the title text in blue above and the first words from Nelson's famous quote in bold black lettering below - England Expects... Artwork by the British painter and illustrator Charles Pears (Chas Pears; 1873-1958). The Sea Cadets was formed in 1856 initially as the Naval Lads' Brigade to help orphans from the Crimean War based on the ethos, training and traditions of the Royal Navy under the motto Ready Aye Ready. The immortalised quote "England expects that every man will do his duty..." was the signal made by Admiral Lord Nelson from his flagship HMS Victory prior to the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, during which he was shot and killed. Printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd Lithograph London. Fair condition, restored tears, restored creasing, restored paper loss, staining, foxing, backed on linen.
