A satirical character that was first used in 1712, John Bull is a personification of the British public. Formed in 1903 as a protectionist pressure group, the Tariff Reform League TRL was a well funded group popular with the Conservative Party in its protest against what they saw as unfair foreign imports and their support of Imperial Preference to protect British industry from foreign competition.
