Original vintage Guinness advertising poster featuring a fun and rare Alice in Wonderland themed illustration by the notable artist John Gilroy (John Thomas Young Gilroy; 1898-1985) of a carpenter wearing a red hat and a green jacket holding a hammer walking arm in arm and talking to a smiling walrus dressed in a yellow, red and blue suit with a bow tie next to a large glass of Guinness, the characters being from the narrative poem by the well-known English writer Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson; 1832-1898) The Walrus and the Carpenter (from Through the Looking-Glass published in 1871) with part of the text on the side in black and the Guinness line in red: "If seven men with seven tongues Talked on till all was blue, Could they give all the reasons why Guinness is good for you" – "I doubt it," said the Carpenter. "But that it’s good is true." with acknowledgements to Lewis Carroll and Macmillan & Co Ltd written in italics below. One of the world's most popular beer drink brands, Guinness is an Irish dry stout founded by Arthur Guinness in Dublin in 1759. Printed in Great Britain by Sanders Phillips Co. Ltd, London. Large size. Horizontal. Very good condition, small restored tear, some printing marks, two sheet poster, backed on linen.
