Rare original vintage World War Two propaganda poster - That Winning Smile - issued in the Netherlands to scare and warn the Dutch people that supporting the Allies is dangerous and that a Soviet victory and destruction of Europe by the Bolshevik forces is preventable only by Nazi Germany, featuring a design by the Norwegian artist and Nazi collaborator Harald Damsleth (1906-1971) depicting a man in a business suit holding two suitcases with the Union Jack flag, the Star of David and stickers reading Danger and Secret on them, his mouth being stretched into a wide smile and lengthening his neck by a system of pulleys attached to scales, a character with big ears loading labelled weights including Invasion of the Netherlands / Invasie Nederland on the left, and a hand dripping in red as blood with a Soviet hammer and sickle on it about to place a large weight labelled Total Soviet Victory / Totale Soviet Overwinning on the right, a lady with blonde hair pointing to the man's neck and trying to stop the load in front of the blue sky background, the title text in English above and in Dutch below reading - Now is not the time to lose one's head / Nu gaat het er om niet het hoofd te verliezen. The publication information of the weekly newspaper issued in the Netherlands with dates of display and the SS Schutzstaffel insignia is printed on the margin - No 5057 Uithangtjid 15/8 15/9 '44 Leest Storm SS / Sign hanging Read Storm. Good condition, restored tears, creasing, minor staining, backed on linen.

What is a lithograph?

Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.

With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.

Where do you deliver to?

We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
