Westminster School College Hall Norman Wilkinson LMS

£1,500.00

Original vintage travel advertising poster for the London Midland & Scottish Railway LMS - College Hall Westminster School - featuring artwork by the notable British artist and illustrator Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) depicting a view of the historic refectory (built 1376) showing the dining hall with plates and water jugs on long wooden tables and a portrait painting hanging on the wall above the gallery in the background, the title and information rext below - The buildings of Westminster School lie to the south of the Abbey. They are of all ages from the twelfth century to the twentieth, and together they form a group of great interest and beauty. The fourteenth-century College Hall and the great schoolroom with its hammer-beam roof recall the day when Westminster was a monastic school. A seventeenth-century Library commemorates the rule of Dr. Busby, famous for his rod. In the Dormitory of the King's Scholars, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, takes place the Latin Play which Queen Elizabeth, who re-founded the school, ordered to be performed annually at Christmas. Shrove Tuesday sees the ceremony of the Pancake Greaze. The school uses the Abbey daily as its chapel, and by ancient custom the King's Scholars attend the Coronation and acclaim the Sovereign - with the coat of arms of LMS and the College (the motto on a scroll: Dat Deus Incrementum / God Gives the Increase) on the sides. From a series titled Famous Public Schools on the LMS. Printed in England by Beck-Inchbold-Leeds. Good condition, restored folds, restored creasing, restored tears, restored paper loss in top left corner, staining, backed on linen.

Are your posters originals?

All antique and vintage posters listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.

What is a lithograph?

Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.

With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.

Where do you deliver to?

We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
