Located in the Peruvian Andes and a popular tourist destination, Cusco / Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire from 1438-1533 until the Spanish Conquest, and is known for its Incan archaeological remains (the dry stone walls built by the Incas were fitted tightly together with no mortar, a strong method of construction that has ensured their survival through even earthquakes over the centuries) and Spanish colonial architecture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and the Historical Capital of Peru; the 15th century Inca citadel of Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and one of the new New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
