Artwork by the painter and poster artist Christopher Clark (1875-1942). The annual tradition of Trooping the Colour dates back to before the 17th century; since 1748 the ceremony has been held to mark the official birthday of the British sovereign in June. Horse Guards Parade is located next to St James' Park and Whitehall in central London; jousting and other tournaments have regularly been held on the site since the time of Henry VIII (1491-1547); the area is now used for this annual parade and other ceremonies.
