Original antique British women's suffrage movement propaganda poster issued on behalf of the Women's Social and Political Union WSPU by Emmeline Pankhurst and Emmeline Pethick Lawrence featuring a political caricature of Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith (1852-1928; Liberal Party PM 1908-1916) below the title - The Right Dishonourable Double-Face Asquith - depicting him as a two-faced figure in the centre, one side dressed in revolutionary clothing holding a French tricolour flag with Liberty Equality Fraternity written on it, waving it at the King wearing the Imperial State Crown and Robe of State worn for the State Opening of Parliament in the House of Lords, with a quote below: Citizen As--th: "Down with privilege of birth up with democratic rule!" and, facing to the right, as a smartly dressed wealthy aristocrat holding a cane towards a lady with chains on her wrists representing the suffragettes, pointing at a paper reading Liberty Equality with the speech caption below: Monseigneur Asq--th "The rights of Government belong to the aristocrats by birth - men. No liberty or equality for women!" and the rest of the bold text in red below, set within a red and green line border - "Votes For Women. Women! The Government refuse to give you the vote. Therefore, work against the Liberal Candidate, the nominee of the Government. Electors! The Government pose as champions of the Constitution, but deny constitutional liberty to women. We call upon you to support the Women. Vote against the Government and keep the Liberal out." The artist's name given as A. Patriot. The notable political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) founded the WSPU in 1903; Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence (1867-1954) was also a women's rights activist and suffragette, treasurer of the WSPU; both were arrested for causing a disturbance in 1906 and were imprisoned for refusing to pay the fine. As a result of the suffragette movement, women over 30 years old were given the right to vote in 1918. Printed and published by M.
