The SS Giulio Cesare provided first, second and tourist class passenger services on the Italy to South America route for the Italian shipping company Navigazione Generale Italiana NGI; from her maiden voyage in 1922 until 1925 she was one of the largest ships in the Italian merchant fleet with the SS Duilio; she became part of the Italian Line from 1932 until 1942; she was then used by the International Red Cross during World War Two and was sunk by an Allied air attack in 1944 while she was out of use in the port in Trieste.
