Scotch Ale Younger Beer Horse Race Cartoon
Original vintage alcohol drink advertising poster for Scotch Ale issued by Wm Younger & Co Ltd Brewers in Edinburgh featuring a great cartoon by George E. Studdy (George Ernest Studdy; 1878-1948) of a man in a chequered suit, yellow waistcoat, white hat, boots and lucky horseshoe tie pin leaning against the rope in front of a race course and blowing the froth off a glass of Scotch Ale while turning out his pockets and dropping a button, key and corkscrew to the ground next to a riding whip and bottle of Scotch Ale in front of a jockey crying on the back of a seated horse as the horse race continues on the track behind him, the poem below reading: When you’ve lost hundreds on a race, And ruin stares you in the face, Do nothing desp’rate in a hurry, But drink Scotch Ale and do not worry. The William Younger & Company Brewery was founded in Edinburgh in 1778 in the grounds of Holyrood Abbey by Archibald Campbell Younger; the company was registered in 1887 and was producing a quarter of all Scotland's beers by the 1900s; in 1986 the Holyrood Brewery complex closed (now the Scottish Parliament building), and in 2017 the brand was sold to Marston's Brewery. Scotch Ale is a type of beer that refers to a strong pale ale produced in Edinburgh Scotland. Fair condition, paper browned, staining on margins, restored paper loss on margin.

More information about our posters and service.
Are your posters originals?
All our antique and vintage posters, books, maps and prints listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.
What is a lithograph?
Practically all of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves carving each colour of the image onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, we believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £25 for orders placed via our website.
