Nippon Yusen Kaisha Japan Mail Steamship Co.
Original antique travel poster issued by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) to promote its premier passenger services. The poster features a masterful composition that harmoniously blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern Western-style painting techniques. At the centre is an elegant young woman in a richly decorated blue kimono, adorned with floral motifs of chrysanthemums and daisies. She stands on the polished wooden deck of a luxury liner, gazing pensively over the railing at the calm sea, covering herself with a fan from the sun, and another steamship is visible on the horizon. Behind her, the ship's upper deck is alive with activity, showing stylishly dressed Western passengers, highlighting the company’s international appeal and its reputation for world-class hospitality. The bottom of the poster includes a world map showing the company's global routes, along with detailed Regular Sailings schedules and office addresses in Tokyo and London, underscoring the global nature of the NYK Line. Founded in 1885, the Japan Mail Steamship Co. was Japan's largest shipping line and a vital link between the East and the West during the Meiji and Taisho eras. Printed by Mitsuma Printing Works, Ginza, Tokyo. Good condition, restored tears, restored paper losses, staining, foxing, backed on linen.

FAQs
More information about our posters and service.
Are your posters originals?
All antique and vintage posters listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.
What is a lithograph?
Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
