The French writer and statesman Honore Gabriel Riqueti, Count of Mirabeau (1749-1791) was a member of the Jacobin Club and was regarded as the father of the French Revolution (1789-1799); he was posthumously disgraced in 1792. The French General Henri Philippe Benoni Omer Joseph Petain (1856-1951) served as Chief of Staff of the Army in 1917, having reached the rank of Colonel during World War One leading the victory in the 1916 Battle of Verdun (after which he became known as "Le lion de Verdun"); he became Prime Minister of France in 1940 and Chief of the French State in 1994; after World War Two he was tried and convicted for treason and sentenced to life in prison.
