Fokine Ballets Russe Bakst Scheherazade Stockholm Opera

£12,500.00

Rare original antique poster for the Fokine Ballet at the New Theatre featuring The Royal Swedish Opera - Det Ny Teater Kl. 8 Fokin Baletter Fra Kungl. Teatern Stockholm - depicting a dynamic illustration of two dancers in colourful Oriental style costumes designed by Leon Bakst for the Scheherazade ballet, the lady wearing a red leotard with yellow trousers, a feather in her headdress and gold bands on her arms, striking a dramatic dance pose on one knee with her head leaning back and her arms outstretched whilst the man dances in billowing blue trousers, blue cap and gold shoes, the artwork of the pair between the text in blue on the side above and the title in bold black and blue lettering below. The two additional black and white photos show the dancers, Fokine and his wife Vera Fokina, taken during the performance in Stockholm in 1914 (these are not included with the poster). Mikhail Fokine (1880-1942) was a Russian choreographer, dancer and pioneer of modern ballet; in 1905 he married the Russian ballerina Vera Petrovna (1886-1958). Fokine choreographed the famous one act ballet Scheherazade, which was produced by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and premiered at the Paris Opera in 1910. The painter, set and costume designer Leon Bakst (1866-1924) designed the exotic Orientalist costumes for this premiere, and for Fokine's production at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1914. Good condition, restored tears, restored paper losses, restored staining, backed on linen.

Are your posters originals?

All antique and vintage posters listed on our website are guaranteed originals as detailed in their photographs and descriptions, and include a certificate of authenticity.

What is a lithograph?

Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.

With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.

Where do you deliver to?

We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
