Original vintage poster for Orpheus at Whipsnade featuring colorful artwork by the notable English artist and illustrator Herry Perry (Heather Perry; 1893-1962) depicting a man in a yellow shirt and beige trousers playing music on a flute as a reimagining of the classical Greek myth, charming zoo animals gathered around him on the grass including a bear, camel, kangaroo, lion, parrot, fox, duck, deer, rabbit and an ostrich, a deer, and a rabbit with the title on a scroll flowing through the trees above. Opened in 1931 Whipsnade Zoo was a pioneering open-paddock wildlife park located in Bedfordshire to the north of London. The zoo was advertised by London Transport promoting visits by Green Line Coach from Marylebone Station. In classical Greek mythology, Orpheus was a legendary musician, prophet and poet who was able to charm things by song and music. Drawn on Stone by Herry Perry finished on the feast of S. Gregory 1933. Printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd., London. Good condition, restored tears, restored paper losses, staining, trimmed bottom edge, backed on linen.

What is a lithograph?
Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.
With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.
Where do you deliver to?
We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
