Egypt UAR Abu Simbel Temple

The Abu Simbel rock temples were built to commemorate victory at the Battle of Kadesh and as a lasting monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II (Ramses the Great; c. 1302 BC-1213 BC) and Queen Nefertari (Nefertari Meritmut; d. 1255 BC); originally located at the Abu Simbel village in the Aswan region of Egypt near the border with Sudan, the temples were relocated to higher ground in 1968 due to the building of the Aswan High Dam on the River Nile and creation of Lake Nasser. The union between Egypt and Syria - the UAR (United Arab Republic) - in the Middle East was established in 1958 but broke up in 1961 due to the coup d'etat in Syria, although Egypt continued to be known as the United Arab Republic until 1971.
