Original vintage National Academy of Sciences (NAS) poster - The Oceans "Icing the pole or in the torrid clime, Dark-heaving-boundless-endless and sublime" Byron - from a series of six posters created in 1958 by artist Herbert Danska, depicting an outline of the ancient Greek god of the sea Poseidon holding a trident with his arms around a spherical object as a globe, small inset photographs and scientific graphs of scientists at work with a deep sea spider and measurement charts marked with sonar lines and a fishing net from a research ship in front of icebergs above, a submarine and underwater features on the earth with the bold title text and quote below. The American nonprofit, non-governmental organization National Academy of Sciences was formed in 1863. A National Academy of Sciences Project IGY Under grants from the National Science Foundation and The Ford Foundation. Large size. Good condition, creasing, tears on edges.

What is a lithograph?

Most of the posters found on our website are lithographs. This is a method of printing that involves drawing a reverse image of each colour onto a piece of stone. The poster sheet is then imprinted consecutively with a stone slab for each colour, creating a stunning and rich image.

With the exception of silk printing, I believe that other printing techniques do not deliver the same impact of colour as lithography.

Where do you deliver to?

We ship posters worldwide rolled in shock-resistant and hard wearing tubes. Unless specified otherwise, delivery is free within the UK and standard international delivery is £35 for orders placed via our website.
