The Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran was built by the Great Northern Railway Company (GNRI; 1876-1958) at the end of the 19th century when the town became a popular seaside resort; the Bundoran Golf Club was built at the same time, in 1894. Located at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in the small seaport of Rostrevor Co Down on the Carlingford Lough cove, the Great Northern Railway Company bought The Mourne Hotel (opened 1876) and renamed it the Great Northern Railway Hotel; the hotel was destroyed by a fire bomb during the Northern Ireland Troubles in 1978.
