Anti Churchill Dakar Mers El Kebir WWII

£750.00

Large original vintage World War Two poster featuring the aftermath of the attack on Mers-el-Kebir with crosses over graves, battleships sinking at sea and warfare smoke rising to form an image of Winston Churchill wearing a helmet and smoking a cigar looking down on the scene. This battle on 3 July 1940 was part of Operation Catapult aimed at preventing the Germans taking the French ships in the Mediterranean and involved the British Navy bombarding the French Navy at its base at Mers El Kebir ('the Great Harbour') on the coast of north west Algeria, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 French servicemen. Good condition, restored minor loss, backed on linen.
